The French press is a timeless brewing method that produces a rich, full-bodied cup of coffee. Despite its simplicity, there are techniques that separate a mediocre press from an exceptional one.
Why French Press?
Unlike filtered methods, French press allows coffee oils and fine particles into the cup, creating a heavier body and more robust flavor. It's immersive, intimate, and wonderfully uncomplicated.
The Right Grind
Use a coarse grind — similar to breadcrumbs. A fine grind will pass through the filter, creating a muddy, bitter cup.
The Recipe
Step by Step
1. Preheat your press with hot water, then discard it
2. Add your coarsely ground coffee
3. Start your timer and pour all the water at once
4. Stir gently to ensure even saturation
5. Place the lid on with the plunger pulled up
6. At 4 minutes, press the plunger slowly and evenly
7. Pour immediately — don't let it sit or it over-extracts
The Pro Trick: Skip the Plunge
Some specialty baristas skip pressing entirely. At 4 minutes, scoop the top crust off and pour slowly, leaving the grounds settled at the bottom. The result is a cleaner cup.
Cold Brew in a French Press
Add coffee and cold water in a 1:8 ratio, stir, and refrigerate for 12–24 hours. Press and serve over ice for incredibly smooth cold brew.
