AeroPress Techniques: From Classic to World Championship Methods

The AeroPress may be the most beloved and versatile coffee brewer ever created. Its ability to produce different flavor profiles based on technique makes it endlessly fascinating.

Why AeroPress?

Invented by Alan Adler in 2005, the AeroPress uses air pressure combined with immersion brewing to extract coffee quickly. It's portable, virtually unbreakable, and produces a remarkably clean cup.

The Standard Recipe

  • Grind: Medium-fine
  • Dose: 17g
  • Water: 220ml at 85–95°C
  • Time: 1–2 minutes
  • Classic Method

    1. Place filter in cap, wet it, and lock onto AeroPress

    2. Set on your cup, add coffee

    3. Start timer, add water to the top

    4. Stir for 10 seconds

    5. At 1:30, press slowly for 30 seconds

    Inverted Method

Flip the AeroPress upside down, letting no water escape during brewing. This gives you full control over immersion time.

    1. Insert plunger 1cm, flip upside down

    2. Add coffee and water

    3. Stir, wait 1–2 minutes

    4. Attach filter cap, flip over your cup, press

    World Championship Techniques

The AeroPress World Championships have spawned countless creative methods using varying temperatures (as low as 80°C), unusual ratios, multiple filters, and extremely long or short brew times.

    The Bypass Method

Brew a concentrated 1:6 shot, then dilute with hot water. This is great for highlighting delicate single-origin flavors.

Experiment freely — there's no wrong way to use an AeroPress.
